"NEW CLUB KIDS" - The Official BOOK LAUNCH

This Thursday [5th May] we are launching the book that documents our scene - the people, the parties, the outrageous outfits...the good times.

Originally published in What? magazine, here is the opening article by Judah Jordan.

"At a time when the revival and re-interpretation of bygone trends and styles within architecture, music, and fashion has become pivotal in the way we communicate and express ourselves; the club scene is no exception. The resurgence of the Club Kids on the London party scene has not disappointed and a new generation (in an ode to self-expression) has arrived guns blazing, to pay tribute to those daring, eccentrically clad individuals of times past.

Thursday 5th May sees the launch of New Club Kids the first book by Bulgarian born fashion photographer Oggy Yordanov, a regular contributor to WHAT?, who moved to London in early 2001. Yordanov, one who revels in the avant-garde and alternate beauty, based himself in London’s vibrant Soho district and here (camera in hand) began rubbing shoulders with the outlandish individuals that were reviving the London underground club scene.

This pictorial offering of over 300 photographs documents the revival of a subculture that many had forgotten (in some cases never heard of), and with a new generation of Club Kids taking up the reigns, emulating no other than the likes of Steve Strange, Boy George, Leigh Bowery, Michael Aleg and James St. James (from the New York Club Kids), to mention but a few, Oggy manages to encapsulate the nature of these nonconformist individuals in a kaleidoscope of provocation.

England and especially London has always had a history of embracing the avant-garde and zany; far from giving themselves over to the conventionality of the then mainstream punk movement the ethos of Club Kids was firmly established with the founding of the Blitz Club in London’s Covent Garden in 1979, under Steve Strange, and the ushering in of the New Romantics movement. Yordanov’s book offers a comprehensive introduction that documents the start of the New Romantics in the late 70’s with the Blitz Kids, whom in turn inspired the original Club Kids of New York under the joint leadership of Michael Alig and James St. James from the Limelight Club.

The revival of the Club Kids movement here in London, throughout the noughties, is testament to the fact that here is where it all began. The new generation, reincarnations of the wearable art and dressers from Leigh Bowery’s Taboo era, have come into their own with nights like Nag Nag Nag at the Ghetto, Kashpoint, Jodie Harsh’s Circus, Boombox and the list is endless. These are featured in Yordanov’s book of portraits, celebrating the excesses of DIY fashion with double lashings of glitter, and the beauty of letting it all hang out (literally)."

Club Kids and Fashion Week

Jean-Pierre Braganza A/W11

LFW Aftershow Party

In the first night of Fashion week, Jean-Pierre Braganza threw a party that gathered the club kids and London fashionistas at the super-sleek Mayfair venue Jalouse.

The invite was stating:
Make an effort - Drag Queens, Club Kids, Freaks & Goths all welcome
And they didn't disappoint.
Around 9pm the queue started to build up and the club soon became swamped with colour and flamboyant outrage. In a good way of course.

Highlighs of my favourite looks here:

As the night advanced, live PA by Rubi Goe and music by Luke Worall, London's own model-come-DJ, entertained us for a good measure until it was time for the after-party which was in conjunction with London's hottest new night HAUTE!

HAUTE! vs SHABBA DABBA DA! presents...ADA ZANDITON AW11: THE CRYOFLUX! in association with Illamasqua

As London Fashion Week is fast approaching and London prepares for the spectacular of shows and events that emerge around this prestigious week, Illamasqua want to invite you to celebrate with us at Haute!

Promoter Munroe teamed-up with club-kids leader and and creator of the ultra-successful SHABBA DABBA DA, Daniel Lismore in  a dedicated celebration of ADA ZANDITON's latest collection THE CRYOFLUX.  Joining forces with them was the latest craze in artisan make-up Illamasqua.
High-energy electro and dance tunes were bumping from the DJ booth and there was an incredible athmosphere.
Even though the party had a relatively early end [at a mere 2am, when usually the main havoc is due], we didn't really mind at all. It is London Fashion Week after all and there were many a show to be rushed for in the morning. As we all know, the club-kid is a dedicated follower of fashion.

All in all, the two parties provided for a great night-out in London town. Haute highlights here:

London Fashion Week starts here!

So, it's LFW and once again the party scene is bombarded with events and do's that are not to be missed. If you're wondering where the London club kids are to be found these days, I can reveal that the launch of the new collection by Jean Pierre Braganza whose party is due tonight at Jalouse, is a definite must-do event. There's been a good relationship between JPBraganza and the club-kids of London ever since his St Martin days and it is guaranteed that his party will be packed with colourful characters. As Daniel Lismore has been tweeting aggressively over the last week: Dress Up Dress Up Dress up... and so they will. Tonight.
The after party (as there always has to be at least one) is scheduled at Concrete (former Tea Bar) which is the home of the relatively new club night "Haute".

Launched last November with a smashing performance by my dearest friends "Pandering and the Golddiggers" (or the Panderers for short), Haute is the brainchild of London socialite Munroe Bergdorf who's quickly establishing herself as the new diva-about-town/DJ/club-kid.
The party tonight promises to be massive.
